NAMI Washington joins in promoting research and clinical trials

We've posted new reports for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program, in which NAMI Washington is a participant.

Researchers recruiting for study of bipolar disorder and genetics

Individuals who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder may be eligible to participate in a research study at the NIH clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. The purpose of this study is to identify genes that may contribute to the development of bipolar disorder (manic depression), and related conditions. Bipolar disorder is a common and potentially life-threatening mood disorder. The tendency to develop bipolar disorder can be inherited, but this is poorly understood and probably involves multiple genes.

NAMI Washington is a participant in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program, a nationwide outreach initiative enlisting state and national organizations in a partnership to help close the gap between mental health research and clinical practice and increase the public's awareness of the importance of basic and clinical research in advancing knowledge of the brain and behavior.

NIMH recruiting young patients for studies

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is seeking boys and girls, ages 7 to 17, with severe mood dysregulation, sometimes given the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, to participate in a non-treament study or a treatment study.

NIMH is also looking for children and youth, ages 9 to 17, who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, to participate in a 12- to 15-week inpatient or outpatient study to test the effectiveness of a medication called Riluzole.
